Sony officially revealed their upcoming next-generation console, PlayStation 5, in their recent event, which they titled The Future of Gaming. In this reveal, we were introduced to games that will be exclusive to the console, while some will be multi-platform, but they claimed that everything shown in their reveal was processed and run on a PlayStation 5.
Additionally, we got a first look of the PS5 design, which boasts a white & black color scheme with glowing dim lights between the two colors. It has a unique design that screams a futuristic theme with its color scheme, and it is way different from the designs of its predecessors. Sony revealed two variants for the PS5, namely PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. The former includes a Blu-ray drive, while the latter does not have it, and in return, it is a slimmer version.
As for the controllers, they are now called DualSense controllers, which have the same color and design scheme as the PS5. As for the console’s accessories, there is a charging dock for the DualSense controller, a Pulse 3D wireless headset, a media remote, and an HD stereo camera. These accessories also follow the design of its console.
Now, let us focus more on the announced games for the PlayStation 5.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the follow-up story for the PlayStation 4’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was one of the best PS4 titles. Although, it has been confirmed that it is not the true sequel of Marvel’s Spider-Man, but instead a standalone game within the in-game universe.
Gran Turismo 7
For car enthusiasts, the next numbered Gran Turismo - Gran Turismo 7 - will make its return in PlayStation 5. The reveal showed a bit of gameplay and visuals of the game, which look smooth and stunning! Hopefully, unlike its predecessors, this game will be released within the first year of the PS5 release.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Insomniac Games may have outdone themselves in the new Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart! It looks fresh and amazing! We were actually shown two reveals: one for its cinematic, and one for its gameplay. The visuals appear detailed and fantastic especially as Ratchet and Clank drift from one dimension to another, which is also an actual gameplay mechanic in the game.
Square Enix is brewing a new IP, which they named Project Athia. As for its reveal, they mentioned that it has been designed exclusively for PS5. It mainly showed various locations based on a fantasy world full of different creatures and huge monsters while having a touch of realistic graphics and design.
Stray is a futuristic game that seems to revolve around cats and robots based on the reveal. No more additional information was explicitly given in the reveal. However, it seems like we are playing as cats in a world filled with humanoid robots. This is something for cat and adventure lovers to look forward to!
Another game in the reveal that showed some glimpse of its gameplay is Returnal. You play as a female lead who has gotten herself stuck in an alien world. It is a third-person shooter that has a mix of roguelike gameplay mechanics as the alien world keeps changing and you have to adjust your game style based on it.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a LittleBigPlanet spin-off, and we are getting this instead of the successor of LittleBigPlanet 3. However, this is a 3D platformer akin to Super Mario or Crash Bandicoot. It looks cute and fun to play! Furthermore, it even includes up to four-player co-op!
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Game developer, Ember Lab, revealed their charming adventure game, Kena: Bridge of Spirits. In the trailer, we saw a glimpse of how the combat plays out, and the game definitely has that Pixar-like design for its visuals, which will surely attract a lot of gamers.
We will finally get a new Oddworld game, which is named Oddworld: Soulstorm! This one is a remake of the 1998’s Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. In its trailer reveal, they showcased a lot of the gameplay mechanics, and they really expanded the game with enhanced visuals and new storytelling elements. This game has been in development for years and has been postponed many times, so we really hope this one is getting released by the time PS5 is here.
Announced first at E3 2019 last year, Ghostwire: Tokyo’s gameplay was finally shown in this reveal. It is a first-person survival-horror considering you are fighting monsters and ghosts in Tokyo. You fight them through the use of spell-casting, which looks satisfying, to say the least. It still looks spooky after you see a headless girl going towards you, and that is not all that you are going to meet in this game.
Gearbox and Counterplay Games demonstrated their upcoming game, Godfall, which they claim to be a looter-slasher game. We can say it is a mix of Dark Souls-like gameplay and Borderlands looting mechanics. Armor sets seem to be a huge factor in this game, which players can modify to have an advantage against armored monsters. You can also team up with up to three friends in this game.
Remember Astro? Well, he is back with his own game, Astro’s Playroom. It will be a free game for PS5 and it will be pre-loaded on all versions. It is a next-gen platformer showcasing PS5’s capabilities in games in terms of its features.
Bugsnax is another creative and adorable adventure game from the creators of Octodad, Young Horses! Based on the reveal trailer, it is an adventure game where you have to look and collect for different creatures. It features different biomes you can visit as these biomes have specific creatures inhabiting it.
Horizon Forbidden West
The sequel for the highly-acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn was showcased in this reveal named Horizon Forbidden West. It is a cinematic trailer, but it is being narrated by the protagonist, Aloy. The beautiful and immersive environments were showcased, and a glimpse of the tragedy that will bestow in the game, which seems to be a plague causing the wildlife to die.
The PlayStation 5 reveal was a fun ride! We learned a lot of things regarding the console, the accessories, and its upcoming games. It has a very good line up of upcoming exclusives such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, and many more.
