Christmas is fast approaching, and you may be wondering, what is the best gift to give to your friends, relatives, and families? Well, if they are gamers and they own at least one of the current generation consoles - Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or even a PC - then you are on the right track!

We will provide you some of the best video games that you can get as a gift for each platform. The article is divided based on the platform, and you may notice that we prioritize to list the exclusives rather than titles that are multiplatform to avoid duplicates, but we did mention the other platforms where the game is released.

Let's start with Part 1 which will cover games on Switch and PS4!

Nintendo Switch

Fire Emblem Three Houses

Other Platform(s): N/A

Description: Fire Emblem series is a staple for Nintendo consoles, and it garnered a lot of new fans especially after its resurgence in Nintendo 3DS several years ago. This year, they released the first Fire Emblem for Nintendo Switch, and it is quite amazing. If you are thinking about getting a new game for Christmas or as a gift, this should be on your priority list especially if you are a huge fan of tactical RPG.

You play as a mercenary who was chosen to be a professor at Garreg Mach Monastery within the Church of Seiros after saving the three students that turned out to be the leaders of the Three Houses - The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer. At the start of the game, you have to select which house to choose from, and each house has its own unique students that you have to lead and teach along the way.

The gameplay is the traditional turn-based tactical RPG with additional improvements such as adding battalions, which makes the battle grander and visually pleasing as if you are really in the middle of the battlefield. Teaching students is another core gameplay that showcases your skills as a professor as you help your students improve their weapon efficiency and acquire new skills based on their goals.

Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield/Double Pack

Other Platform(s): N/A

Description: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are two of the most anticipated games for Nintendo Switch this year. Despite the backlash that Gamefreak has gotten from their fans because of the seemingly less and simplified content, I still believe picking either of the two games this Christmas as a gift for yourself or to your loved ones would still soothe your cravings for a totally new Pokémon game for Nintendo Switch. If you are a huge fan of Pokémon and has the budget to spend on video games, you can even avail the Double Pack to get the two games in one go.

This time around, you go on a journey in the new region of Galar where you will be selecting from one of the new starter Pokémon - Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble. As you explore Galar, you will encounter wild Pokémon that you may battle to level up your current roster or catch them to build the ultimate roster to go up against Gym leaders until you become the Pokémon champion.

Of course, new features are added as well such as Dynamax and Gigantamax which transform a Pokémon to a more powerful and larger being, and this feature also unlocks the Pokémon’s Max Moves, a powerful version of their regular moves. Take note that Gigantamax can only transform specific species of Pokémon. Another new feature is the Pokémon Camp which allows players to go camping and interact with their Pokémon. They can even visit other player camps as well as cook curry!

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Other Platform(s): N/A

Description: Luigi is back at it again on capturing ghosts and solving puzzles with its third installment of Luigi’s Mansion series. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a great adventure game, although, I believe it is best played with a friend through online or couch co-op. In this installment, we have to follow Luigi as he tries to save his friends as they are captured and trapped inside the painting in a haunted hotel by King Boo.

If you have played the previous installments, the game offers very similar gameplay with much improved and new innovative mechanics. Luigi will use his new “weapon”, Poltergust G-00, an improved version of the poltergust from the previous installments, to capture ghosts as well as Strobulb and the dark-light device. You can now also slam ghosts to each other or to the ground, fire a plunger and even create shockwaves.

Each floor of the haunted hotel has a different theme giving you, the players, with a variety of visual designs and puzzles that do not look repetitive. Gooigi is also getting a comeback appearance from his first appearance in the remake of Luigi’s Mansion in Nintendo 3DS. He is significantly weaker than Luigi but will help you reach places that Luigi cannot due to certain obstacles such as spikes and bars.

There are different game modes such as ScareScraper and Screampark, both are competitive party game modes up to eight players.

PlayStation 4

Death Stranding

Other Platform(s): PC (2020)

Description: Yes, Death Stranding will be a multi-platform title next year, but for now, it is an exclusive PlayStation 4 title. Developed by the creative genius of Kojima Productions, this game is stunning visually and mindblowing just like any other Hideo Kojima’s creation.

You play as Sam Bridges (played by Norman Reedus), a porter that transports cargo from one place to another in a dangerous open-world apocalyptic setting of the United States as the world is now plagued by supernatural beings.

The gameplay is both simple, yet challenging. You basically deliver packages from one point to another. Despite being called an action game, it emphasizes stealth and urgency as you are mostly outnumbered and defenseless. You will encounter bandits who may try to steal your cargo, or supernatural invisible beings called BT or Beached Things.

Players progress in the game by means of expanding the coverage of the Chiral Network by successfully delivering cargos. Expanding the network provides you access maps of areas, and the ability to use blueprints to create consumable items. The online aspect is simplistic as well as you can leave supplies, structures, and messages for other players, or even recover their own cargos for you to complete their delivery. Unfortunately, you cannot directly encounter other players in the world.

MediEvil (Remake)

Other Platform(s): N/A

Description: 2019 is the year where games from 20 years ago are pretty much brought back alive and create wonderful remakes from scratch based on their original counterparts. MediEvil is one of them, and the developers actually stayed way too faithful to the original. Now, that depends on you whether it is worth going on a trip in the memory lane with this game.

The game takes place in the kingdom of Gallowmere, and you play as Sir Daniel Fortesque, a literal boney knight who was accidentally resurrected from death by an evil sorcerer named Zarok. He has to fulfill his duty as a knight of Gallowmere and defeat the evil sorcerer once and for all!

As for its gameplay, it is a hack-and-slash game, which as I mentioned earlier, the developers stayed way too faithful with the original as only a few minor changes have been made to improve the quality of life of the players. You can choose between various weapons to fight against enemies such as clubs, swords, throwing knives, and even crossbows.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Other Platform(s): PC, Xbox One

Description: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is probably one of the better Call of Duty games for the past few years, both on its single campaign and multiplayer. I put this one on the PlayStation 4 platform since this is most likely the one with the most active community compared to others.

First off, the gunplay in this game is amazing, which fits very well as the game leaned more on realism this time around. The single-player campaign is back which is missed by several Call of Duty players, I am sure. This time around, they managed to tell a very compelling story with a great atmosphere, which makes this game to have one of the best campaigns in Call of Duty series.

On the other hand, the multiplayer mode has shifted from run n’ gun style to more tactical gameplay with an improved and deep weapon customization. The game has several multiplayer game modes that you can choose from ranging from a 64-player massive battles in Ground War, as well as the PS4-exclusive Survival, and more.

And here is our list of the best games to get for Christmas on both the PS4 and the Switch consoles. Which one are you planning to get? Let us know if the comments!
